How do I ask for an interview with, or a photograph of, Jeanette Winterson?
Refer to the agent. The site does not handle requests for interviews - we get too many - thanks.
How can I find out about your tours and appearances?
We will always flag these on the site under information a month before they happen. If you are on our mailing list, we'll contact you direct.
Will you sign my book?
If you are in the UK or Europe, send it to Caroline Michel, at William Morris, London, see above. If you are in the USA, send to Suzanne Gluck, at the William Morris Agency New York (see above for address).
Will you read my manuscript?
No. I'd never get any work done.
Will you reply to my emails?
Yes and no. You've seen the rules - nothing boring, nothing rude, nothing we've answered already on the site. Emails from the feedback form will arrive in our office and a real person, sometimes me, will deal with them. If it all gets too much and we're going mad, we'll let you know.
I want to be a writer. What should I do?
Write.
Where do you get your ideas from?
If I were following the current science fad of Essentialism, I'd say it must be genetic and that my mind was born stuffed with all the ideas I'll ever have, just as my ovaries are stuffed with all the eggs I'll ever have. In fact it's about connection and imagination. The more I can imagine, the more I can connect, and more I connect, the more I imagine. If you want to know more, you need to get a copy of my essays ART OBJECTS. You'll like the book and it answers a lot of questions -personal and not - about creativity.
What Star Sign are you?
Virgo with Leo rising and a Gemini Moon. Sun-Pluto conjunction in Virgo and Mercury-Uranus conjunction in Leo.
Do you take that stuff seriously?
I take everything seriously - that's the way to have the most fun.
Who do you like to read?
I'm an old-fashioned girl. That is, I'm on the side of Harold Bloom. Everybody should read the Canon of Western Literature, even if you don't accept it as canonical. For a reader, it's riches. For a writer, it's roots. A lot of modern work is rootless and shallow because the writer has no literary resources - nothing to draw on, in a way that is often unconscious. It doesn't matter how you've been educated, if you can read you can educate yourself. Ignorance has no advantages.
Ok, but what about the new stuff?
If I give you a list it will be written down and used in evidence against me. There are lots of writers I like, but I get my kicks out of poets. I'm going to be putting some poems (not mine, don't worry) on the site. When I read 'em and I like 'em, I'll paste them up for you.
That's it then?
Have a look at the site and you tell me...
